The Maze

June 5th, 2020

Starring: Hiker 1, Hiker 2 (Millennials)

The Maze region of Canyonlands National Park, Utah.  No cell service, no people, no trees.

Wearing bulky backpacks, Hiker 1 and Hiker 2 come upon a fork, with two crudely blazed trails stretching in two differing directions.  They stop and stare.  Hiker 1 pulls out a map.

HIKER 1

We go this way. I think.

Actually maybe not.

HIKER 2

So we’re lost?

HIKER 1

Who said that?

HIKER 2

Me.

HIKER 1

We’re not lost.

I just don’t know which we take.

HIKER 2

“Two trails diverged in a remote canyon with no direct access to water…”

HIKER 1

Frost is boss.

HIKER 1

Except we shouldn’t take the one less traveled by, should we?

We’d want the one people take that leads them back to their Jeeps, eventually?

HIKER 2

They look the same.

HIKER 1

Or there isn’t one.  Maybe they loop back towards the same route.

HIKER 2

Maybe.

Or maybe one’s clearly right and one’s clearly wrong and we have to deal with what we choose.

HIKER 1

Yeah, that would suck.

I guess the only thing we can really do is pick one.

They stand there, with the map, still having no idea, not moving.

HIKER 2

You think this is why boomers say we’re indecisive?

HIKER 1

I thought we came to get away from boomers.

HIKER 2

We did.  So let’s prove them all wrong.

HIKER 1

What do we do?

HIKER 2

Make a choice.

HIKER 1

Right.  Make a choice.  And stick to it.

Hiker 1 points to one trail.  Hiker 2 nods and follows.

They walk away, down the path...

HIKER 2

And that has made all the difference.
