The Seed

August 24th, 2020

Starring: Sleepy, Wakey

Mid-morning.  Wakey’s in the kitchen, preparing bloody marys.  Sleepy enters, looking sleepy.

WAKEY

You slept.

SLEEPY

Couldn’t get enough of it.

WAKEY

Sex dream?

SLEEPY

No, I stopped having those.

...

I think I wrote a children’s story.

In the dream.

And I was on a book tour going to all those Scholastic book fairs reading it to kids.

WAKEY

Sounds like it was a hit.

SLEEPY

Guess so.

WAKEY

You should write it.  In real life.

SLEEPY

I don’t remember it.  All I know is that I wrote one.

WAKEY

But if you dreamed it, the seed’s in there.  You could find it.

SLEEPY

That’s the thing.  All this potential’s inside, but it’s walled off.

WAKEY

Welcome to the club.

SLEEPY

What club’s that?

WAKEY

Being conscious that consciousness sucks.

Do you feel different?

SLEEPY

A bit cheated.

WAKEY

You skipped denial and went straight to anger.  Nice.

I’m already at acceptance.

SLEEPY

Does it get better?

WAKEY

Not really.  You just get more comfortable.

...

But hey, you’re aware, and that’s worth celebrating.

If you can’t turn off the brain, might as well numb it.

Wakey hands Sleepy a Bloody Mary.

WAKEY

To your book’s subconscious success.

Cheers!

SLEEPY

Cheers.

Clink.  Drink.
