Hors D’oeuvres

November 18th, 2020

Starring: Server 1, Server 2

The kitchen of a fancy auditorium/venue.  Servers 1 & 2, in black tie attire, are standing in the kitchen/staging area, looking at the appetizers on their mini plates on large trays:

SERVER 1

Goat cheese flatbread or olive skewers?

SERVER 2

Which do you think will be less popular?

SERVER 1

Not in the mood to get swarmed, eh?

SERVER 2

To say the least.

SERVER 1

I like having the popular tray.  People trying to catch my eyes, following me across the room. I get to be belle of the cocktail hour.

SERVER 2

You do this for the attention?

SERVER 1

No, but it’s more entertaining that way.

SERVER 2

What do you really want to do?

SERVER 1

Acting.

You?

SERVER 2

Sociology, of some sort.  Research based.

SERVER 1

But you don’t want to interact with people?

SERVER 2

I’m more watcher than doer.

SERVER 1

To each their own.

SERVER 2

Is that supposed to be Shakespeare?

SERVER 1

I wouldn’t know, I mostly do commercials...

From the double doors, the catering manager bursts in, taps her watch at them, then briskly moves past the Servers into the depths of the kitchen.

SERVER 1

Showtime.

So which do you think?

SERVER 2

I’ll take olives.  Polarizing taste, and people don’t like the thought of pits, even if they’re pitted.

SERVER 1

Alright.

Server 1 picks up the tray of goat cheese flatbreads.

SERVER 1

Let’s see if you’re right, rhodes scholar.

SERVER 2

Enjoy yourself, Olivier.

SERVER 1

Who?

SERVER 2

I’ll tell you between courses.

Server 1 exits through the doors.  Server 2 shoulders the olive tray and follows Server 1, into the fray.
