Starring: Reader, Writer
A subway stop. Reader is alone, sitting on a bench. Writer enters, sitting on the other side of the same bench. They both acknowledge the other. A few moments later, Reader pulls out a paperback, starting to read. Writer looks over at the cover and does a double take. Writer debates whether or not to say something. A few more moments pass before:
WRITER
Um
Wow, that’s awesome. Thank you.
READER
What’s that?
WRITER
I said thank you. I appreciate the support.
READER
What did I do?
WRITER
You’re reading my book.
READER
Oh
I had no clue.
WRITER
Oh
I thought you took it out because—
READER
I just wanted to read. I’m headed to book club.
WRITER
Ah, the book club.
Some interesting discussions?
READER
I haven’t been able to make it.
WRITER
Busy times…
READER
I like to be caught up before going.
WRITER
Slow reader?
READER
Depends on the book.
…
…
I’m sorry for not being a fan. I’ve met a lot of you.
WRITER
Me?
READER
Writers.
WRITER
We’re all the same huh?
READER
Only in that every one of you acts like you’re the only writer I’ve ever met.
I’m one too. We’re not that special.
The train arrives. Reader gets up.
READER
But sincerely, congrats on the paperback.
The train doors open, and Reader boards. Writer watches as the train speeds away.
