A park swing. Kiddo, a little too big for the seat, still swings.
KIDDO
I turn 18 on Friday. I missed this year by three days.
I should be sad, but I don’t feel it.
I’m relieved. I’m relieved that whatever happens or doesn’t happen, or might unfold, I can say I had nothing to do with it. By law, I had no choice. My hands are clean.
I might regret it. Maybe in hindsight, I’ll want to look back and say I could’ve made a difference, or tried. Be part of history, exercise my right.
But for three more days, I am innocent. Just a kid who likes to swing.
I’m gonna hold onto that.
Kiddo keeps on swinging.
