Scoops

January 19th, 2021

Starring: Missionary 1, Missionary 2 (20’s)

Somewhere in the Eastern Hemisphere.  The Missionaries sit outside an ice cream stand/shop.  Missionary 1 has a double-decker scoop in a waffle cone.  Missionary 2 has two scoops in a cup:

MISSIONARY 1

How’s yours?

MISSIONARY 2

Yum.  Blueberry and caramel is a good combo.  You want a taste?

MISSIONARY 1

I’ve got my hands full.

MISSIONARY 2

Is the buttercream good?

MISSIONARY 1

I don’t know, it’s on the bottom.  If I don’t eat the top scoop first, the walls of Jericho fall.

MISSIONARY 2

Ha!

See, that’s why I like the cup.  You get all the flavors all at once.  No mess.

MISSIONARY 1

But then you lose the majesty of the cone.

MISSIONARY 2

To me, the majesty’s in the combination of the flavors.

MISSIONARY 1

But a cup is so...bleh.  It doesn’t show the sheer awesomeness of what ice cream is!

I look at a cone, and I see structure.  I see beauty, I see texture I...I see God, holding us up!

MISSIONARY 2

Hmm.

If we are all equal in the eyes of God, then we must all be on the same level, mixed together.  God should be a cup!

MISSIONARY 1

In God’s eyes, we are equal.  But every soul, as their own scoop, is touched by the cone in a different way.  God’s love looks different between you and me, and him and her.  What we all share is the beautiful world God’s created for us!

MISSIONARY 2

But the cone is unjust!  It allows complex hierarchies that cause suffering!  An inability to find salvation!

MISSIONARY 1

Just the opposite.  The cone provides room to grow, rise up, find better touch with a higher power!  The cup is confining and simplistic!

MISSIONARY 2

The cup surrounds every scoop.  You can feel its touch and guidance around you!  And its confines are made to be simple: the ten commandments, love thy neighbor!  It fosters rich harmony, not unsavory imbalance!

MISSIONARY 1

The world is imbalanced!  That’s why we must be supported by God!  In a cone!

MISSIONARY 2

The world is balanced!  But we must embrace it through God!  In a cup!

MISSIONARY 1

Then God can’t love you!

MISSIONARY 2

Then God can’t love you!

MISSIONARY 1

(overlapping)

That was unkind.

MISSIONARY 2

(overlapping)

I didn’t mean that.

MISSIONARY 1

If we were all the same, how could God live uniquely in all of us?

MISSIONARY 2

He couldn’t. That’s why we’re such a good team.

MISSIONARY 1

Do you think we’re doing it?

MISSIONARY 2

What?

MISSIONARY 1

Changing people?

MISSIONARY 2

I don’t know anymore.

All I know is God’s got a plan for everyone.  All we can do is point them the right way.

MISSIONARY 1

Yeah.

Preach.

…

Can I try some?

MISSIONARY 2

If I can try some buttercream.

Missionary 1 nods.  They each hold out their ice creams, and take spoonfuls of the other’s.  They try their samples and nod approvingly.  They feel a little holier.
