Brunch
May 18th, 2020
Starring: Carmen and Liza (female, early/mid 20’s), Cory (male, early/mid 20’s)
A local brunch spot. A table set for five. Carmen sits on the farthest left side, then Liza, then the two empty seats, then Cory. They’re all dressed in brunchy attire: nicely, but not too nicely. At the start, Carmen and Cory are both on their phones.
CORY
He’s not texting back.
LIZA
So that’s an official no?
CORY
I told him I was coming either way. He could surprise us with a second wind. I just don’t know if he can get up right now. Went pretty hard last night.
LIZA
He’s so dumb.
CORY
What about Corinne?
CARMEN
Church ran long, she’s on her way. She already told me what to order for her.
LIZA
Are they going to let us? Without like, the “full party” assembled?
CARMEN
It’s our money, they’ll take it.
Do we know what we’re getting? I do.
LIZA
I need another minute.
CORY
Same.
CARMEN
Should we do drinks first then?
We were talking on the way here Cory and we thought it would make the most sense to get the big daddy mimosa pitcher for everyone and it would be like twelve bucks a person. Would you down to split that?
CORY
...um
Like I know I might have one.
Like one individual one.
LIZA
No yeah we just thought if we all went in on it it would be less per person.
Like you could get like two or three for the price of like, one and a half.
CORY
I probably just want one though. So I don’t know if it makes sense to split it if I’m only going to have one, you know?
LIZA
No yeah. We just thought it might make sense—
CARMEN
Especially if we had everyone here—
LIZA
I mean if Corinne wants to drink maybe—
CARMEN
She will.
LIZA
So yeah maybe we should still do it.
…
Cory would you be good with that?
CORY
I think I’m just gonna get coffee.
...
CARMEN
Sure yeah—
LIZA
—no we don’t have to get it.
An awk silence. Everyone looks into their menus for refuge.
