(Family) Reunion

May 24th, 2020

Starring: Tara and Martina (Female, late 20’s/early 30’s)

A high school gymnasium.  It’s been outfitted to become the reception for a high school reunion, with mini standing tables, little snacks.  Tara and Martina stand at one, holding their drinks:

TARA

This is all so funny.  I feel old.

MARTINA

We are old!  Ten years—

TARA

Ten freaking years…

MARTINA

Soo

I’m getting married.

TARA

Oh wow, congrats!

MARTINA

Thanks, I’m pumped.

TARA

Someone I know…?

MARTINA

Your cousin.

TARA

Oh wow.

When did y’all meet?

MARTINA

On an app.

TARA

He’s like six years younger tha—

MARTINA

Yep.  But it’s love.

Can I have your blessing?

TARA

Why would you need my blessing?

MARTINA

Well you’re a family member.

TARA

But I’m not like the family member to ask—

MARTINA

I’m asking everyone.  I’m starting with the extended family.

TARA

I don’t know if that’s crazy or super thorough.

MARTINA

Maybe it’s crazy thorough.

TARA

Does he know we played field hockey together?

MARTINA

I think so.

That doesn’t mean you’re going to object right?

TARA

...no.

I was just wondering if he knew.

We don’t hang with that side of the family too much.

MARTINA

Really?  Why?

TARA

It’s a complicated thing.

MARTINA

Well I should probably know, right?

I’m going to be family.

TARA

Well maybe you should wait until you’re family.

I don’t mean to be mean.

It’s not your fault.

Just

Small world.

MARTINA

Tiny.

...

So do I have your blessing?

TARA

Yeah.  Of course.

Martina takes a paper notecard from her pocket.  She checks off a name.

MARTINA

So anyways, what’s new with you?
