Starring: Associate, Activist
An office at a branch of a mid-sized bank. Associate sits on one side of the desk, pouring over a stack of papers. Activist looks on.
ASSOCIATE
Thanks again for coming in. Seems like you’re busy.
ACTIVIST
I always am, but this is important. Gotta get this in order.
ASSOCIATE
Of course, of course.
So I was parsing through your paperwork before turning it all in, and I just wanted to check on a couple things…
ACTIVIST
Sure.
ASSOCIATE
So on page three and page nine for employment status you left the section blank?
ACTIVIST
It’s just that none of the options really fit my situation. And there wasn’t a box for “other.”
ASSOCIATE
Would you mind describing your situation? Just so I can have a better idea…?
ACTIVIST
So I’m not earning any income right now, because I’m not employed, like, in the corporate sense. But I am working, so I’m not unemployed either.
ASSOCIATE
Are you working for somebody?
ACTIVIST
Also yes and no. I kind of work for the people.
As in the greater population. Humanity.
ASSOCIATE
Is there a title you like to use?
ACTIVIST
I think of myself as a freelance activist.
It’s been a lot of travelling around, going towards the causes that need me.
Redwood deforestation, Alsakan drilling, Standing Rock. This is my first time back in a city since the occupy movement. Plenty of issues here, so I thought it was time to settle back in.
ASSOCIATE

ACTIVIST
Exactly.
ASSOCIATE

Since you mentioned you were freelance, maybe we can just put “Self-Employed” here?
ACTIVIST
Oh, sure, I guess that works.
Even though I’m not really working for myself—
ASSOCIATE
No no of course not.
I mean that in the sense that you’re a very self-motivated individual—
ACTIVIST
Yeah, no, that makes sense. Thank you.
