Muse
July 25th, 2020
Starring: A and B
At work. B is wistfully staring at one wall of their cubicle. A walks by and stops.
A
You’re sweating.
B
I need help.
A
Are you ill?
B
Oh no, just in love.
A
I see. With whom?
B
An artist.
A
Goodness! What kind?
B
Just an artist.
A
Oh.
B
I need to express my love. But I don’t know how.
A
Just tell the truth.
B
But how?
A
Truthfully.
B
But how? I need to show I know something about art.
A
Hmmm
What about a poem?
B
Poem? That sounds hard.
A
It’s not that hard. Try a Haiku.
B
What do I do?
A
It’s three lines.
The first line is a 7 syllable sentence.
The second line is a 5 syllable sentence.
The third line is also a 7 syllable sentence.
B
That’s it?
A
That’s it. Short and sweet, no rhymes, but it shows you know a thing or two.
B
Ok…
B writes quickly on a legal pad, occasionally counting out syllables on their fingers.
You say you are an artist.
That is cool to me.
Let’s go to a museum.
How is that?
A
Perfect. Now write it out on some nice construction paper, or something.
B
Ok!
You think it’ll work?
A
Without a doubt.
You spoke from the heart. They like that.
B
Awesome.
...
Hey thanks.
A
Happy to help.
B
Wait...how do you know all this stuff?
A
I read.
…
Sorry, I gotta get to this meeting. Let me know how it works, ok?
B
Sure, I will!
B stares at the poem, reading it over, smiling.
