Trick or Treat
October 31st, 2020
Starring: Corbin (male, mid 40’s), Nikki & Josey (identical twins, female, 8), Grant (male, 60’s), Mandy (female, 60’s)
The suburbs, around 7:30pm. Grant’s front door/porch. Corbin, Nikki, and Josey all walk up to the door. They all wear masks. As costumes, the girls are wearing white t-shirts and jeans, with cardboard signs hanging with twine from their necks. On Nikki’s sign is “545+” and on Josey’s sign is “40,000+” both written in black sharpie. Corbin rings the doorbell for them, then takes a step back. The girls open their pillowcases in preparation.
The door opens. Grant, also wearing a mask, greets them.

GRANT

Those are some cool costumes you got!
NIKKI/JOSEY

GRANT
Now what are y’all dressed up as?
NIKKI
I’m the number of children at the border who are separated from their parents!
JOSEY
And I’m the number of people who are still in jail for minor marijuana offenses!

GRANT
...oh
...
Wow, how cool!
Did you two come up with that all on your own?
NIKKI
Our Daddy helped us.
GRANT
I bet he did!
CORBIN
They said they wanted to be something extra scary this year.
JOSEY
And we’re as scary as it gets!
NIKKI
Boo!
JOSEY
Boo!
GRANT (playing along)
Ahh!
Well you got me spooked!
Grant holds out the candy bowl.
GRANT
Help yourselves!
The girls each take a few pieces and put them into their pillowcases.
CORBIN
What do you say, girls?
NIKKI/JOSEY
THANK YOU!
GRANT
You’re very welcome.
CORBIN
And what else do you say?
NIKKI/JOSEY
MAKE SURE YOU VOTE!
CORBIN
When?
NIKKI
On Tuesday!
JOSEY
Yeah, Tuesday!
GRANT
Hahaha, if you say so!
Y’all have a good night.
CORBIN/NIKKI/JOSEY
Goodnight!!!
Grant closes the door. He slips off his mask and puts it down next to the candy bowl. He’s visibly perturbed. Mandy enters:
MANDY
I’m surprised we got a few!
GRANT
Yeah well
It’s official.
Even Halloween’s gone partisan.
MANDY
What happened?
GRANT
Nothing.
…
Can you handle the door? I’m going to bed.
MANDY
It’s early.
GRANT
I know. I just got really tired.
MANDY
Ok.
Sure, goodnight.
GRANT
Goodnight.
Grant grabs a Reese’s peanut butter cup from the bowl before walking off to the bedroom. A moment or two later, the doorbell rings. Mandy, frazzled for a moment, puts on Grant’s mask and grabs the candy bowl. As the door opens, the deafening sound of more kids screaming “TRICK OR TREAT!!!”
