Take Five

April 29th, 2020

Starring: Man and Woman (30’s-40’s)

A clean white room.  One long bench spans the back wall.  Man and Woman enter, wearing shorts and t-shirts.  Woman carries a brown bag with her.  She sits on the bench and pulls out a packet of aluminum foil.  She unwraps it and removes a hard-boiled egg, which she begins eating.  Man notices and looks at her.

MAN

Lunch?

Woman nods, mid-chew.  She pulls out another one and offers it to him.

Man holds up his hand, as if to say “I’m good.”  She eats the egg silently.

WOMAN

Is the smell bothering you?

MAN

There are worse smells out there.

Woman gives some sort of “mhm” response.  She takes out a third egg and stares at it.

WOMAN

Which do you think came first?

MAN

Pardon?

WOMAN

Egg or chicken?

…

MAN

God.

WOMAN

Sheesh.

That’s deep.

You really believe that?

MAN

Yes.

WOMAN

So he’s your guiding light?

MAN

I didn’t say that.

WOMAN

But you’re a believer.

MAN

Yes.

WOMAN

So he guides you.

MAN

I didn’t say God was a he.

WOMAN

Alright…

But you still follow him—uh—them?  It?

MAN

Yes.

I follow God.

I just don’t always like where I’m led.

…

WOMAN

I get that. I get that.

She pulls out another egg.  Offers it to him.

Last chance.

Man considers.  He accepts the egg and eats it in one bite.  He wipes his hands on his shorts.

A bell sound chimes above them.

WOMAN

Back to it.

Woman flips open the bench, pulling out a hazmat suit.  She hands one to him, then pulls out one for herself.  They put them on methodically, helping the other zip all the zippers, etc.

When they’re ready, they exit together.
