Shallow

July 27th, 2020

Starring: Partygoer 1, Partygoer 2

A pool party.  The partygoers stand at the edge, in swimsuits, holding adult beverages.

PARTYGOER 1

They say the water’s fine.

PARTYGOER 2

I bet.

Hard to believe it’s our first of the summer.

PARTYGOER 1

I hope it’s our last.

PARTYGOER 2

You love parties.

PARTYGOER 1

Pools are a different animal.

PARTYGOER 2

It’s still a party.

PARTYGOER 1

There’s this added pressure to congregate, bob around in the shallows. Invites a certain kind of conversation.

PARTYGOER 2

Yes.  On the surface.

PARTYGOER 1

I mean have you ever had a unique talk at a pool party?

PARTYGOER 2

Once I thought my partner was divorcing me in a hot tub.  But it all was a misunderstanding.  Very shallow.

PARTYGOER 1

I think you’ve cracked into something there.  The deeper the water, the deeper the conversation.

PARTYGOER 2

Yes!  Treading water equals a treading mind.

PARTYGOER 1

It’s a flaw in pool design.  Imagine it: a pool that’s only deep end.  Fascinating!

PARTYGOER 2

A deep end party.  I love that.

PARTYGOER 1

Let’s do it.  You dig a pool, and I’ll dig one too.

PARTYGOER 2

15 feet deep apiece!

PARTYGOER 1

We’ll be drowning in good conversation!

PARTYGOER 2

Haha!

PARTYGOER 1

Haha!

PARTYGOER 2

I’ll need to learn how to swim first.

Can you?

PARTYGOER 1

Of course.

But only with a life preserver on.

PARTYGOER 2

Oh, right, yes.

Then I guess I can swim too.

PARTYGOER 2

So do you want to go in?

PARTYGOER 1

Me?  I um—

Do you?

PARTYGOER 2

I mean…

Hey look, they’re serving dinner.

PARTYGOER 1

Fantastic, I’m starving.

Shall we?

PARTYGOER 2

Oh yes, after you.

They exit into the buffet line.
